My pots are informed by my background in painting, and my love for fine art, architecture, design and nature. Each one begins with observation and drawing, and is an experiment with form, gesture and colour. I work with an instinctive approach to shape on the wheel, followed by a layering of slips, underglazes and glazes to build decoration on the surface. I love the alchemy and element of risk in ceramics and that every kiln opening is a chance for the unexpected. Using mud to make is humbling and feels primeval.
I came to ceramics while suffering a chronic creative block since completing a Masters degree in painting at the Royal College of Art. Working with ceramics gave a fresh opportunity to learn, make, be expressive and share in a creative community. After a career break from working in art galleries and raising my young family, I began teaching wheel throwing to others. Now I love to share the joy of making though wheel throwing workshops and courses.
My work is held in private collections across the UK and USA.
